Janryuumon 7th Dan, rating fell quite a bit since I switched to Tonpuusen+Tetsugeki theory. No matter, if I managed to play JRM a little bit more often I could manage to 9th dan already, but I'm a tenhou slave.

Janryuumon reached sixth dan and got back some rate.

Tenhou, still 5th dan but rate is now increasing, not doing so bad at hanchan. Not -that- bad.

Still rediscovering mahjong every day. So it seems. It just gets more and more complicated.

R1900 Get. Agari-ritsu somehow up to .258. Rentai is pretty high too. 4th place considerably low, especially for tonpuusen only. Fuurou ritsu still -relatively- low at .394; I wanted to have at least .500 or so, but I don't get enough chances to call it seems. Riichi ritsu is also not as high as I wish, even though I'm not doing damaten for the most part. I wonder if this time around I'll keep this up long enough to have a new account that can also enter tokujou, and maybe houou in a few months.

TenhouTonpuu update

The tenhou account I made especially for fast tonpuusen (east wind) has reached R1800 in a few games.

My goal is also to increase the hand-win rate from .252 to at least .300 and to increase the open hand rate to at least .400 or .500

Super attack style.

As for Janryuumon, no news. I've been playing mainly friendly matches for live broadcasts.

Just an update on how I'm doing in Janryuumon. I'm letting tenhou rest for a while. My stats are somewhat stable right now, and I expect them to continue that way. I wish I could have the same stats in tenhou.

Reached first dan in Janryuumon. Not sure how the new experience system works. Similar to tenhou maybe?

I was watching Kaji's broadcast today and managed to join him for two games. I couldn't really do much of anything. Even though it was tonpuusen, and I like to think of tonpuusen as one of my fortes, but... I don't know, I was too much of a coward to go ahead with some hands, and I also felt it was embarrassing to deal in publicly, so I kept folding hands, even when I had nothing to fold with! But, all in all, it is fun. I'll try to loosen up a little for next time. Anyways, the replays.

Right after that, I played a freeroll tournament in Dragon Kong, EMA rules, and I managed to hit first! I also got a Haitei with a 4p tanki, and a Shou San Gen (w/ryanmen wait). I had some lucky hands, and I managed to only deal in once, to a 1000 points hand, which later on ended up making another guy and I tie for first place in the first match. w

So, now, I have some money in there too. And no way to withdraw it, of course.

I normally don't like to kan to a riichi, but...

I didn't have many safe tiles, if any at all, and the only way to go was either to discard whatever few suji there were (not always completely safe) or to go on. Obviously, I couldn't discard 6s, so I decided to kan, maybe expecting to draw a safe tile or to keep myself from being the haitei or something.

Well, that is some dumb luck right there. Tsumo.

Then, I realized you can play as many as you want, and only the last five are computed. orz
So, I would try to make up for the first games, until I dealt into a toitoiz... twice. And it's a shame, because if I didn't get last in that game, I would have ended up with a neat score in the end. On the other hand, I played like shit the whole tonpuusen, but in my defense I was very drowsy since the first tonpuusen.

Then I realized that if I was to play again, I would be basically deleting my first places, and seeing that I didn't get any sleep, and that I'm not using my computer as it died, and the flash player's tiles are so difficult to see, I'm not likely to take first place again, so I decided to call it a day, because let's face it, I wasn't going to win anything from the beginning. The winners will be those who collected a few wins and a yakuman, and the winner of it all will be the one who wins with Shou Suu Shii + Tsuu Ii Sou. So, whatever, I'm happy enough to be in the possitive side.

Finally I caught a break and things started going normal again. Sometimes, better than normal...

It was like I couldn't stop winning.

After my turn as dealer ended, I just sat back and played safe for the rest of the hanchan. Everyone else scored minus. Gawd, do I love it when luck is on my side.

I'm beginning to feel the serious difference between 上級　and 特上。 There's always tenpai in the sixth discard. And while folding to a riichi, I always deal into a silent mangan/haneman (I have a natural talent for dealing in with the takame for sanshoku). If I didn't get haneman in my deal turn, I would be losing a lot more.

Being careful backfires. Being offensive backfires. I don't know what to do. I don't know how to adjust my game to the table. I just discard everyone's winner no matter what I do. Especially while in riichi. And I normally riichi with ryanmen or more.

I mean, fck, 上級 was so easy.

I'm now a rated player at Janryuumon 2. Yay for me. I'm not doing so bad. I'm busting the heck out of them nashi-nashi tables because of the sengoku event. If I finish this event on time, I'll start doing some 3p for the nuki-dora event. I'll explain the events later, for now, stat screenshot

So, yeah, the events. Sengoku is a nashi-nashi table only event. Sengoku event consists in that, all players start with 50 ovals, and each time they deal in, they lose an oval. You can't recover any ovals. Every time you win off someone else's discard, the points you won are added to a counter. When you are out of ovals, the more points you got, the better. You can get premium items with those points, and there is also a ranking with nice prizes. Until the end of this month.

The nuki-dora event is a sanma only event, where it counts how many kita you made until the end of this month. There is also a ranking, and prizes for ranked players.

As of now, I have 313000 points and 19 more ovals. According to my initial calculations, I should be around 600k by the time I run out of ovals. Not enough to win anything (1st place has 1300k, and 5th place has 630k or so) currently, but I tried.

Weekly Update

Just an update of things that happened around this week, or perhaps a while back too. First of all, 5th Dan Achievement.

No R2000 yet, but oh well.

I got yet another chankan at tenhou! More rare than a yakuman.

As far as Yakuman go, I got a kazoe at 特上 in tenhou.

And a riichi ippatsu tsumo hon-itsu san an kou toitoi haku sha... Suu An Kou at Janryuumon.

As far as FAILED yakuman go:

Failed daisangen (some jerkoff won)

Failed Suu An Kou (dealer ponned the dora and later hit me):

Failed Suu An Kou tanki (I reached with a san an kou, and later drew my fourth ankou. Turned a yakuman into a mangan. At least I won!)

And as far as failing go, I completely failed at picking the tanki of my double riichi, just because I wanted to obey theory.

At least, I got another double riichi at tenhou which I did win:

On other news, Janryuumon 2 is out and it's awesome. Nashi-nashi feels good, and they have 3p/Sanma now. I managed to get three kita on the first turn, lol:

Anyhow, the way points are tallied at Janryuumon is kind of BS. Dealer pays the same as no dealer in the case of tsumo. For example, a no-dealer haneman tsumo, dealer pays 6000 no dealer pays 6000. NOT cool. I wish they used Tenhou's way, but I can't complain.

Anyhow, I managed to complete a neat but simple hand yesterday while I was on great flow.

Gawd, I love this game, even though this game hates me most of the time.
Well, except when it give me riichi dora 5 for a change.

I won't get any more ura dora during the whole month after this, it seems.

Weird shit only happens to me during friendly matches. But still, a chankan is a weird sighting on itself. Now, with this, I only have left "san kan tsu" to have completed every non-yakuman yaku. But I hate to kan, so I don't see this happening for a whiiiiile.

Anyway, "pics or it didn't happen."

Of course, what is the need to stop a kan? Well, when I let others kan, the worst of things happen to me. Like a sanbaiman when I'm dealer:

But I get these things do happen... I did get a rinshankaihou on a furiten tanki once.

So I shouldn't complain.
Still, there are two things I fear... sha kan, and sha tanki. I would eliminate that troublesome wind tile if I could.

Leveling at Janryuumon

I made a new account at Janryuumon, because I wanted to see how fast I can top my older stats. Turns out, I got there very fast. These are my current stats:

41 matches. Style: Protection (Planning + Defense)
1st: 39% 2nd: 22% 3rd: 32% 4th: 07%

46 matches. Style: Planning (Dora Use + Open-Ended waits)

HIGHLIGHTS

Just, some moments I thought were good to post in these Janryuumon grinding.

Anyways, I wonder if I can keep this up once I enter the higher rate room. Abusing small fish is fun, but a head-to-head challenge is also welcome.

Situational

Mahjong is -not- about the beauty of the hand, but about winning. The more you put this into practice, the more you win and the better you feel. For example, what would you do with this hand?

Ryanpeikou tenpai. With a tanki on any 2-8 tile, ryanpeikou+tan yao. Quite a rare hand, wouldn't you say? But that's half of the story.
Look at the points and round. A 2 fan tsumo from the guy on the left, and goodbye to first place and game over. Seeing this is oorasu, I am good with even a 1000 points hand (agariyame ari).

Here, riichi with a wait on the East is awful. The guy on last is last by 3500 points. Seeing that he has no reason to fold, he could easily build a 3900 hand and either get his tsumo or hit us while in riichi. Both mean 2nd place to us.

Riichi might make the guy in 2nd and 3rd fold, maybe, but that is no good either. Assume the guy in third has an East pair and is ready to attack, and the guy in second has an East and folds, never discarding it (why would they discard our Double East?), our hand is dead, so is the hand of the guy in second and third, but it's the guy in 4th we should perhaps worry about. In his attempt to hit third place, we might end up second.

Damaten is not a bad move, but the east has to go when we get a better wait, even if it means sacrificing the ryanpeikou. We have no need for such a hand here, just winning is enough. A tanki can easily be upgraded to a multisided wait in 2-3 turns.

I ended up with a 4-sided-wait and decided to riichi, in order to aim for a tsumo. We have 8 tiles available to win on, and that's good enough to tsumo. Riichi prevents the 1000-2000 points damaten/open hand from the guy in second if he sees we are really quiet.

Also, a fast tenpai here is key. West has a pon on the dora, and if he somehow gets his mess of a hand together in a few turns, the tsumo would leave us second place too.

By riichi with a good wait, we disable the guy to our left, aim for the guy on our right, slow down the player in front, and we have a high chance to tsumo. All of which means first place.

I have been playing East Wind only lately, and I didn't do so bad. It seems to be easy. I don't have 8 hands to wait for the baiman comeback of the guy who's last. Imagine a player whose only strategy is "get menzen tenpai faster, insta-riichi, auto-win." This is foolish, but I believe it's also the strategy of the average beginner. Now, imagine a bot that's programmed to get menzen tenpai faster, insta-riichi, and just autowin. What will define their total winning?

Given that the "skill" is just the same, should we say "luck"? Luck? Or rather, probability? Statistics? Averages? EV? After 5000 games, will their stats be the same? (given that the player never improved or detoured from his strategy)

Is it luck? Then, can a bot "get lucky"? No, that cannot be, in the case of the bot it's just probability talking. Purely statistics.
Then, why would you call it "luck" in the case of the player? Why would you feel you can have "luck"? Does your sole presence on the table give you a heads-up? Do you really feel that special?

Luck is merely your -interpretation- of an outcome (either possitive or negative) that is merely linked to probability. You cannot control it, you cannot understand it. Study statistics and probability instead, and then apply it.

After I recieved my beloved Etopen, I played 4 games while holding on to it, and managed to win the first two games. After that, I played two more games and not only did I win them, but I scored two different yakuman in them. Suu An Kou and Daisangen. So, the thing was, my friend just made an account and he was happily playing as a 9th kyu in ippan. But he has the habit of not folding. Suddenly, he deals in a mangan and manages to somehow get 20k or so behind. He kinda desserved that, considering his lack of judgement, but the thing is, he was gonna ragequit after dealing in, so I told him to let me try to turn things around. I ended up getting a dealer baiman that got him back into first place. I wish stuff like this would happen when I play in my accounts, but it was very funny nonetheless.

(Just a note, きめっち (read as "kimecchi") is my "focused" account, in which I would log in to play only during conscious concentrated moments. Of which I don't get too many; hence the low number of games. And yes, I do play that bad even in concentrated/focused moments. But, oh, well...)

I have no intention on continuing playing there until I get a little more skilled. Skilled enough to upgrade it to 4th Dan without losing rate, that is.
In the meanwhile, I'm trying to improve my 4th dan account (xkime) to R1800, which is not so hard. I need three more wins or so. From there on, I'll play on Tokujou as much as I can.

This blog has seen me grow since rookie　（新人), when I just began to play and would play in nashi-nashi just to win by insta-riichi, and now, after a whole year of playing hanchan after hanchan, reading "WWYD"/何を切る, a few online resources, and the like, I think I am somewhat intermediate. Still pretty bad, I fck up at crucial times, but at least I can accomplish a few good wins, and not deal in that much. And I really hope this blog continues to see me growing, until one day I can achieve 10th dan in a few years/decades. Nonetheless, I find much accomplishment in having a place where I can look back to and think that I am moving somewhere.

Even if the whole blog just looks like "vanity." I like to look back at old times, and see "what was I thinking?"

After all, mahjong is a game where you should learn from mistakes, isn't it. I plan to get a lot more of mistakes, and improve little by little. I don't really care about winning all that much; I just like competitive hanchan where everyone is trying their best and playing to win. Whatever happens in the middle, is between the tiles and us.

When I first found out we would be playing in a league for points rather than just placing, I thought of it as an opportunity to show how well "scoring average" can result. My first impression was "I'm not going to let anyone take any of my points away without a fight." There was no room for a "this tile is dangerous, but if it passes......" mindset. No, I would not allow for that to happen. I would attempt to play solid, by the odds, but not recklessly. It doesn't hurt to fold here and then; after all it would be better not to lose points. And thinking about all this, I began to play.

Dang, I start as dealer. As usual. Besides that, a not very flexible hand. I tend to believe the first hand of a round can pretty much tell you how the rest of the game will be. So, we'll play and see.

I unexpectedly got my tenpai... but other than tan yao it doesn't seem to be able to be worth much more. It seems that 5 that I discarded kind of backired, right? Well, I was getting a bad feeling like someone would reach with a better hand soon, so I decided to keep this one silent waiting on a silent cheap win on the 4p, and try again for something better in the renchan. If someone riichi'd, I would have no problem throwing this one away. I'm not desperate for it.

Ah, come on. My ippatsu tsumo? At least it was the yasume 1p. Well, it's not like I can throw a tamenchan furiten riichi here, so let's just take this 1500 points and move on.
However, I think this alone was kind of like a reflection of what the rest of the games would be. Me, getting less points than I should, just because of being over-conservative. If my strategy began by backfiring, it surely would end by backfiring as well.

Next hand, I lose my dealer when kamicha declares riichi and toimen deals into his ippatsu for 12000 points. A rough start.

Later, I try to move by calling my north and expecting a fast win with 2000 or maybe 3900 if I get lucky. But my hand has trouble moving. My kamicha got his tenpai wiaitng for 3-6p and decided to keep it silent. When he throws a 1p, I call it.

Here you would like to discard 3p, right? Well, no... I actually discarded 8s. I still can ryanmen that 3p anyway. I thought of 3p as dangerous for both, toimen and shimocha. But I never expected it actually was kamicha's winning tile. That was just some dumb luck right there.

Immediately after that, shimocha makes a tsumokiri of 3p dealing in for only 1000 points of pinfu nomi.

Shimocha declares insta-riichi discarding a red 5 to make a nakaburi tanki on 4s. I move on as well, and decide to make a tanki wait on the same tile, expecting to double ron. Pinzu are a no-go as well. However, shimocha deals into the dealer while in riichi, who had been tenpai for a while. Oh, well. I wasn't expecting to win this one anyway.

A few hands later, I'm dealer again, and I get a 147p three sided wait for... yakuhai. Anyway, my kamicha declares riichi waiting on 4-7m, and because of those quirks of the game, my very next draw is 4m.

Tsumokiri would let me keep my wider wait, but... no, 4-7m is way too dangerous. I discard 4p and make a tanki on 4m. If we win, we double ron. Later on, I did draw 7p and "bawww" but there was no other way. The round ended in a draw, and I got my 1500 points anyway. I don't mind sharing them with Mr. riichi. I lost my dealership to a small tsumo next hand.

A few hands later, I take the offensive for toi toi and a few dora, making a kan on 3m, thus preventing for the moment (along with my 7p toitsu) shimocha's possible chanta.

But the game decided to, even though of my efforts, make me end third when first place declared a dealer riichi, and then third place dealt into last place. Things didn't go really as planned... Ryuukyoku would have been nice.

And that was it for the first hanchan.
I hadn't dealt even once, won a few hands, and still managed to end third. But this "let's not deal the dangerous tiles, and in any case aim for double ron" mindset seemed like the way to go.

Next hanchan, I began taking a more agressive approach, but unfortunately, so was everyone, and the beginning of the game was a lot of high value hands, so the "first place badge" was chaching between players like crazy. I managed to make some use of the flow and get a win, made bigger thanks to kamicha's kan.

In oorasu, dealer makes a riichi for an ittsuu, and as usual I get my tenpai to double ron, since 7p is a NO go.

Immediately after, toimen wins a 2000 points hand seizing second place, and I finally make it to the top with +47. Substract the -16 from last hanchan, and we were on a possitive 31 points. I was already cool enough with that.

Third hanchan had more attacking dilemmas, rather than defending dilemmas.
It was pretty hard to attack and defend at the same time, and also, my toimen had a huge momentum going on, and going into south, it didn't look like it was gonna get any better. Surprisingly, I steal hadn't dealt in even once.

I put auto win on, since I wasn't expecting shimocha to discard that tile instead of using it... I was silently gunning for kamicha or toimen, who were the ones most likely to go all defense if I decided to riichi, and also had bold discards around the vecinity of the 5. Or even a tsumo would have satisfied me. However, I auto-ron'd that five before I could cancel it, and the round ended with a -8 for me, and 8000 more points away of first place. Meh, it was close. I was still on possitive points, and hadn't dealt even once just yet. I was in a good possition, I wouldn't mind if it ended just like that.

However, it would all change in the fourth game.

I got mangan and haneman tenpai quite a few times, but didn't win either. Others kept dealing into others, and there was a ryuukyoku too. It was though, reaching tenpai that fast and not getting my win. But still, since I hadn't discarded anyone's winning tile even once, I still had chance to just do shit and end up possitive.

Suddenly, all four of us reached tenpai and declared riichi. And then we got a draw, suu cha riichi. The first one I have experienced. I had four riichi in Janryuumon before, except that it's not a draw in Janryuumon; you just keep playing and discarding. It was kind of interesting. And sort of an omen.

I wanted to get my hands on those delicious sticks on the board, however, the dealer who was in last place gets, as a gift from the heavens, a second turn riichi, and subsequently steals all sticks and bonus on the table.

Next turn, shit happens again, and now dealer is out of last place with a tsumo.

Unstoppable. Momentum. I guess it was only a matter of time... I should have pushed forward after this. However, what happened was...

Dealer was again ready with a nice hand. I draw an East, and was already giving up my hand by discarding genbutsu. That hand ended as a draw. The fifth honba hit the table.

My next hand seemed to progress with a few toitsu and an ankou, but suddenly, in the 6th turn, another insta-riichi from the dealer while he was on first place. With the current momentum, it reeked of danger, so I decided to give up. Later on, I ran out of 100% safe tiles. All I had was, a wall of four 2s on the table, and yet another three 3s on the table. 1s seemed like the safer discard for now. However, what the game decided to bestow upon Mr. Dealer this time, was a baiman with a wait on 1s.

My ONLY deal in, during ALL four hanchan... was a dealer baiman. It deduced 24000 points for me, on top of the uma and all that, I ended up with a -57 for that game. Losing all I accomplished. Just in a hand, one single hand. For a few coincidences that happened together. I should have broken the ankou I had, and buy myself more turns, but it wasn't any safer. No matter how hard you try to protect points, the game will find a way to make you pay what you must.

I fell into his momentum and dealt into his hand. Even though he declared riichi. It hurted. But this is a one time thing. This kinds of thing do not repeat themselves too often. A concealed san an kou-toitoi, with the jikaze dora as an ankou? For all I know, maybe I will the one getting it next time. I tried my best and have no regrets. Furthermore, thanks to protecting my valuable points, and even getting a first place once, I could afford this one single fall.

I will get past this and move on. It was very fun to play four hanchan with the same people. And I hope to play against them again. But, for now, I have my eyes set on the next opponents, and preparing a more offensive stance to regain what has been lost. It could all go to hell in just a second, just like it happened this time, but no one can say I didn't try.

I think this will be a rich experience, where I'll be able to see my long term results. If it doesn't work and I end this league in negative points, I'll consider getting rid of the conservative stance for the next league. So far, I'm having fun and learning. I expect the next session very much.

My game gets utter shittier at one point, but I wasn't sure what to do against the other guys anymore. I just started pressing buttons and hoping I wouldn't end up yakitori. It was quite desperating. But still, funny how it ended. I don't think I have many replays as curious as this occurrence. I have one when I ended up last with 7000 points without dealing into anyone AND having won a mangan, which is some awesome tsumo action, but this one was just more fun.

On this situation, I fcked up and just decided to fold completely, but in retrospective I would recommend getting rid of the 5p as safe tiles, and attempt an ittsuu with the haku dora as pair. Even if it's open. That would have worked just fine.

Besides, I was very pissed off about losing my double riichi on the previous game, AND dealing in during the process.

People go for open hon/chin itsu too often. I really love to get these hands closed, it makes you feel like a big and powerful tough boy. They say your e-pen1s grows an inch for every menzen chin itsu you win. This, however, seems to be a lie. Oh, well. I somehow managed to get chin itsu tenpai so fast and with a believable sanmenmachi (three sided wait, or whatever) so I decided to try my luck and riichi.

Of course, my toimen declared riichi afterwards, too. So it was kind of like a little roulette. In the end:

Something like uradora 3 would have been awesome, but my luck is divided in only little fragments like these.

Next hand, I was tenpai with the last monster's young sibling:

Again, sanmenmachi. Upgradeable to ryanpeikou, but I really didn't even need the points, just a winnable tenpai that doesn't require me to riichi and expose my arse. Anyway, the dealer made a mangan tsumo a while later and ended up in first place for like 1000 points. I didn't even bother folding, but useless tiles kept coming to me nonetheless. I still can't get over losing that first place without dealing in. Meh. This kinda thing happens.

What would you aim for?
It took me so long to draw useful tiles that I ended up ponning 1s, and chi'ing 567p, for a jigoku dora tanki for san shoku dou kou doradora, about enough not to end last. But someone won a lot of points off the guy in third, so he ended up last instead. I dealt in a lot that game (twice in a tonpuusen), I'm surprised I didn't end up last.

Notice how I still am left over with yet MORE routouhai. So, yeah.

This happened to me on Pairon, too. Except Pairon doesn't have a nice box that tells you "Yay! Nagashi Mangan! You suck but that's cool at the same time!" No, they just add the points silently after ryuukyoku.

I wonder what happens on other servers and systems. Oh, well.

Consideraciones

Por primera vez en mucho tiempo, creo que en lugar de hacer el típico post con screenshots/links/thumbnails/whatever que nadie mira, escribiré un posts con los pensamientos que estoy teniendo. Para leer. Así que es mejor saltearlo ahora de cualquier forma.

Es un sentimiento extraño; durante el juego hay muchas veces que siento que "debo saber lo que estoy haciendo," pero sin embargo siento que no lo sé. Estoy tomando muchas consideraciones al mismo tiempo; consideraciones bastante vacías. Es decir, de qué sirve leer el senki suji de 8p, en relacion al matagi suji del 5p, con el ura suji del 7p, si luego voy a ser golpeado con Riichi de quinto turno Chii Toi Tsu dora 5 de Dealer al descartar el Oeste (del cual tengo tres en la mano). O qué sentido tiene agonizar frente a las decisiones entre si ir por ryan peikou, o ii pei kou pinfu, si en la misma mano que llegue a tenpai, el de en frente va a conseguir riichi ippatsu tsumo. Y sin embargo, intentar considerar todas las cosas; incluso esas cosas que contradicen a las otras cosas. Quedarse con fichas inútiles pero "safe"/genbutsu/anzen/whatever para utilizar luego, y ver como la obstinación de mantenerlas arruinó la posibilidad de una mano decente; o al revés. La cosa es, aún sabiendo teoría, o creyendo que se sabe teoría, ¿realmente da una ventaja hacia la victoria? Estoy considerando que no. Que en mahjong es casi imposible crear contenido que enseñe teoría, porque la teoría probablemente no exista. Es una cuestión de práctica, adquirida con el tiempo de juego. Es posible enseñar cosas como "si sólo ha descartado fichas del 2 al 8 esta armando Kokushi Musou," u obviedades similares, pero cuando la mayor parte del tiempo todo lo que sucede en la mesa es situacional, es imposible aprender algo sobre una situación que vaya a mantenerse en pie para otra. Más aún, siento que mientras más cosas aprenda y tome en consideración, hay más cosas que estoy ignorando; y es ese sentimiento de ignorancia que carcome mi consciencia en cuanto al juego, afecta mi confianza, y parece extenderse a las fichas que robo/descarto/whatever.

Anteriormente he dicho que es un juego único en el sentido en que algunas veces te provoca sentirte como un Dios intocable en la cima de su juego que ha descubierto la fórmula perfecta para la inmortalidad, y en otros casos simplemente te hace sentirte como que estás vagando sin rumbo o sentido simplemente siendo movido por la corriente/viento/nagare/flow/whatever.

La realidad es, hay varias situaciones que simplemente no pueden evitarse. Hay cosas que no pueden cambiarse. Cuando tu mano o tu suerte mueren; mueren. Okay, sí, podés cambiar tu mano y conseguir una tanki de ese Sur que sucede ser el dora, seguro; pero ganar va más allá del control de uno.

Siento que mientras más cosas aprendo, menos gano. Y probablemente sea así. Por otro lado, seguramente estoy perdiendo mucho menos. Mi rate y rank en Tenhou están subiendo lentamente cuando hace un tiempo permanecían estáticos en un mismo lugar, y eso significa que mi balance entre ganar/perder está de alguna forma mejorando. El problema es que mientras más aprendo, más me amedrento y autocuestiono en cuanto a las pérdidas. Como si "no se supone que deba perder, considerando todo mi conocimiento adquirido." Y ahí está la cosa; el cuarto lugar sucede. En el camino a conseguir el primer lugar, el cuarto lugar es algo que podría y en cualquier momento puede suceder.

El problema es que la "auto-prohibición" del cuarto lugar, va a poner una presión constante y limitar el juego de uno en cada oportunidad. Cuando comencé a jugar en Tenhou, no sólo siendo poco más que principiante sino que tampoco dándole importancia a salir en cuarto lugar, tenía rachas de primer lugar bastante grandes. Y eso es porque no me importaba terminar último con el objetivo de salir primero. Y de hecho solía funcionar, por supuesto en el room general. Mi primer problema fue cuando por primera vez entré al cuarto de Primer Dan y Superior. Ahí recibí varios golpes importantes y bajé 300 puntos de rate. Sentía ese cuarto como una especie de lugar donde el primer lugar es casi inaccesible, y el cuarto casi inevitable. Luego de aprender mucho más, de hecho me parece un lugar "normal." No es excruciantemente difícil, pero tampoco es algo sencillo. Sin embargo me siento mucho más tranquilo de saber que los jugadores ahí, la mayoría, saben lo que están haciendo. Pero ahora, la presión de la posibilidad de terminar cuarto me logra hacer retroceder en lugares donde normalmente tendría la oportunidad de moverme hacia adelante. Tal vez le de demasiada consideración.

Análogamente, cuando juego en modo anónimo donde no hay nada en peligro, gano bastante más. Sin embargo, también pierdo bastante más (la mayoría debido a Rage-Quit después de caer en un mangan silencioso/abierto).

Mi punto es, probablemente mientras más resultados "promedio" pueda conseguir, más estaré avanzando. Lenta y desesperantemente, sin embargo. Aún así, siento que de todo lo que entiendo, no entiendo nada, y de todo lo que estoy haciendo, no sé qué hacer.

A veces me siento como el Dios de la victoria, y a veces como un ignorante descartando fichas al azar.

Probablemente sea ambos.

De cualquier forma, antes de subir tenía 390 puntos, y para llegar a segundo dan se necestian 400. Salí en primer lugar en un tonpuusen del cuarto de higher dan, lo que debería darme unos 40 puntos, o por ahí. Pero no, cuando subís, Tenhou te redondea al puntaje mínimo del rank. Es decir, me dejó con sólo 400 puntos, y no 430 o por ahí. Bleh, no importa, no es como si me fueran a durar mucho.

Estuve en Brasil las últimas semanas rascándome puliendo mis skills en un montón de parrandas locas retiro espiritual. Ya saben, para mejorar.

Si hubiera ganado con el 2 de pin era más magia aún. Sin embargo es lo mismo, porque conseguí el 5 rojo por tsumo, y creo que tenía ura dora.

Meh, si los juegos no están regidos por la suerte, no sé por qué estarán regidos. Es que, un solo hanchan es muy poco tiempo como para determinar el skill, y la suerte prevalece. Todo se decide en las últimas manos. Y bueno, si bien gané, fue una completa mentira. El dora colgando que robé del muro, y que al cantar el kan de dragon blanco éste se volvio el nuevo dora. Ademas de eso, sacar la tanki por tsumo (lo que me permitió quedar primero). Mucha suerte junta. Bleh.

Otra cosa que quiero destacar, es que en el cuarto de los dan (tengo que buscarle un mejor nombre), el riichi es ippatsu el 40% de las veces. La defensa toma un rol MUY importante. El peligro no es un jugador solo a la vez, sino los tres. El tenpai es declarado sólo algunas veces. Es muy desafiante.

Si, "buen juego" es lo último que se pasa por la cabeza al no ganar la partida, pero... este realmente fue un buen juego. Me pareció increíble. No hubieron grandes jugadas, o destacadas... sólo una buena jugada, pura, de mahjong.

El juego estaba muy inclinado hacia mi lado hasta que en el oorasu, el dealer levantó bastante. En un momento tenía yo una delantera de tan sólo 1000 puntos, por lo que debía ganar rápido, y el juego me bendice con un pon sellado de chun, y un pon sellado de 1 man. Quise mantener el tenpai oculto, pero nunca espere que mi toimen estuviera en tenpai.

Perdi esos 1000 puntos y quedé segundo. Pero fue un buen juego.

Estoy en una racha perdedora muy grande... Realmente, es que el mahjong online me está pareciendo mucho más dependiente de la suerte que del skill. Así que me encuentro en el peor estado; jugando sin pensar. Y eso tampoco ayuda. Ugh, debe ser el estado mental.

Cuestión de flow...

Después de la desconexión, entré en una horrible racha perdedora, donde bajé de Rank 1700+ a 1590 y monedas. UGH. Voy a jugar en Janryumon hasta que se me vaya. No puedo pensar bien. Acabo de sufrir disputas familiares... bleh.

Es importante estar bien despierto y tranquilo para jugar. Tal vez vaya a dormir y deje de lastimar mi rank.

Hoy estaba en Tenhou en otra computadora (no tuve oportunidad de jugar desde casa), y comence a perder varios puntos contra mi shimocha. Estaba ya en 14k, y necesitaba volver. La tercer mano del tonpuusen me encuentra como dealer, comenzando con dos hatsu, un chun y un este. El resto, algunos numerales. Me quede estos honores hasta el final, incluso cuando mi shimocha cantó riichi, y comencé mi estrategia de zentsuppa que resultó. Para la veinteaba vuelta estaba en una hadaki machi (espera con una sola ficha) habiendo llamado el hatsu, el chun, el este, y una secuencia. Mi única espera, el haku del cual había salido uno al principio. Me quedé con este haku hasta el final, ignorando las fichas peligrosas que descarté en contra del riichi de mi shimocha. Finalmente, cerca del final, su riichi le obliga a tirarme el haku que necesitaba. ¡Shou san gen~! Hon isou, jikaze hai, bakaze hai, etc. Una mano grande.

En el renchan soy echado de la computadora y me desconecto. ¡FCK!

Me lo venía venir. Ahora quiero mi replay de Tenhou y no lo tengo. D:

En un sólo día (¡aún no se han ni cumplido las 24 horas!) he avanzado del kyu 10 de Tenhou al kyu 3. ¡Con un rank de 1690! No está mal para el primer día. Todavía me aguardan muchos más, en mi camino del Tenhou... (sí... definitivamente suena como Ten).

Sanma (3P)

Hoy fue mi primer intento de jugar Sanma, o "Mahjong de a 3." La funcionalidad es muy distinta, lo cual volvió todas mis decisiones completamente inefectivas. Aún no encuentro "la" estrategia para Sanma, pero se ve interesante y es lo unico que realmente se puede jugar en L7447. Conseguir cuatro jugadores ahí se vuelve tan dificil.

Fue un desastre, pero al menos consegui no terminar último...

Son juegos muy interesantes. Nótese la especial suerte en los juegos donde salgo primero, y el nivel de metida de pata donde salgo cuarto.

2 GYAKUTEN

Los que hemos visto series como Saki, Akagi, Ten, Naki no Ryu, Kaiji, Legendary Gambler Tetsuya, o cuál sea... debemos estar familiarizados con la expresión "gyakuten." Esto es, "to cause an upset" o un "turnabout." Dar vuelta la situación completamente. Esto acaba de sucederme dos veces seguidas. Quedar en último puesto, y mágicamente luego terminar en primero. Es el corazón de las fichas, el "nagare" o "flow," o la suerte. De cualquier forma, resultados e historia.

Había terminado mi racha con una horrible derrota, jugando con Tan Yao abierto (kuitan), lo cual generalmente no me beneficia en nada. Me complicó bastante el juego, y perdí.

Okay, okay, no pasa nada, no fue por tantos puntos. Decidí juntar coraje, y volver al salon de Tan Yao abierto, pero con los dora rojos. Y esto sucedió:

Victorias comunes... ¿verdad? No tanto.

En la primer partida, primera ronda, llego a tenpai fácilmente, pero luego debo decidir si tirar el dora y tener una doble espera, o quedármelo y tener una espera kanchan (central). Decidí quedarme el dora, ignorando el suji de la ficha que tiré en su lugar, y obviamente (había sentido arrepentimiento inmediato, apenas vi sus descartes mientras mi mano soltaba el mouse) caí en el riichi de mi toimen. Un mal comienzo. Comí mangan, y mi "morale" ya se había reducido dramáticamente.

Siguiente vuelta, tenpai. Riichi. Una ittsuu, un par de 6 de sou, y espera ryanmen por un 4 o 7 de man. Mis esperanzas habían vuelto. Coincidentalmente, mi toimen estaba esperando la misma ficha que yo, el 4 de man. Cuando de repente... consigue otra espera; se queda la nueva espera y descarta el 4 de man que yo necesitaba. Comió mangan, y todos los puntos quedaron como al principio.

Conseguimos una victoria cada uno, de los jugadores de los costados, luego empate. Muy peleado. Necesitaba conseguir mucha ventaja, con una mano que no multiplicaba con una de sus esperas.

A último momento, el último 7 de pin sale... en el último descarte (pensó que era safe porque no pude cantarla la ronda anterior). ¡HOU TEI! Eso me dió prácticamente la victoria absoluta. ¿Olvidé mencionar que encima era el dora?

El juego lueeeego de eso, fue incluso un gyakuten más increíble. La diferencia de rank no era mucha, pero me abusaron bastante con mis descartes.

Llegué a tenpai en la primera vuelta evadiendo el riichi del toimen. Tenía una buena espera, pero de repente alguien cae en su mano, y nuevamente es mi toimen quien consigue la ventaja (¿siempre el jugador de en frente...? Es como un anime de mahjong. Akangi Shingeru).

Próximo turno, me tiro a hacer Chin iisou, logrando evadir el tenpai (no declarado) de mi toimen. Pude haber caido en el, pero un cambio de espera me salvó realmente. Empate exhaustivo. Mi mano hubiera sido Haneman. No hay problema, el y yo eramos los únicos en tenpai. Que continúe el juego.

Siguiente vuelta, caigo en la mano barata de 1000 puntos de mi shimocha. Fck, mala idea descartar ese Este. No hay problema, son sólo 1000 puntos... ¿verdad? Y 300 más del honba.

Siguiente vuelta, quiero conseguir momentum armando un tanyao llamando todas las fichas. Llego rápido al tenpai; uno muy raro, pero efectivo. En la séptima vuelta. De repente, consigo una espera mejor (66sou, vino un 7s y decidí tirar el 6). Cambió la espera, y RON de mi shimocha nuevamente. Otra mano barata, pero me sigue respirando en la nuca. Caigo a último lugar con 22.300 puntos (y una diferencia de 7000 puntos con el primer lugar). Como era la ronda 3 de un Tonpuusen, había perdido mucha esperanza. Sabía que para ganar los puntos que necesitaba, necesitaba tener una mano cerrada, y mucha suerte...

Esa era la mano que me salvaría. Una mano que comienza a... 5 de tenpai? WTF? 6 9 m, 1 2 2 9 p, 3 4 6 9 9 s, Sur y Dragón Verde. Ugh... a descartar. Total, si pierdo, el resultado es el mismo.

Avanzan los turnos, y esto lentamente comienza a mejorar gracias a ciertos descartes que resultaron muy efectivos... y en las últimas vueltas mi kamicha canta riichi. Fck. ¡Momento de zentsuppa! Dos vueltas después canto riichi para presionar un poco... esperando que funcione, y debido a las altas posibilidades de caer en la mano de alguien pase lo que pase, busquen el tenpai ignorando el riesgo. Además, el riichi de mi kamicha podía llegar a darme mi ficha.

En esa misma vuelta... mi toimen tira exactamente lo que necesito. RON IPPATSU~ Oh, pero eso no es todo. Ese direct-hit haneman venía cargado:

Fcking ura dora. Podía llegar a mucho más si en vez de ese 8 de sou en la mano hubiera tenido un 5... pero no estoy en posición de exigir. Había vuelto desde el abismo, y ahora en primer puesto. Sólo tenía que sobrevivir la última ronda.

Última ronda, mi toimen (el dealer y mi principal amenaza) canta riichi en el segundo turno. Oh, fck. Su única espera era el 1 de sou, que aún no salía para ninguno. Si el ganaba, debíamos seguir... y eso significaba seguir corriendo el riesgo de perder. Los de mi izquierda y derecha no hubieran podido detener su momentum, estaban casi pintados... Tenía que ganar yo, y mi mano estaba horrenda y no tomaba forma. Me siento "más tranquilo" cuando en la sexta vuelta mi kamicha canta riichi. Tal vez pueda detener a mi toimen con eso... Y sí, ron ippatsu a mi shimocha. Con Haneman. Eso lo colocó en un mejor lugar, y me dió la victoria... por tan sólo 100 puntos. Si su mano hubiera valido 100 puntos más... por algún honba, o lo que sea, o si hubiera tenido uradora...

Pero lejos, mi Gyakuten preferido es Gyakuten Saiban (conocido en el occidente como Phoenix Wright).

En fin, los resultados fueron beneficiosos. ¡Continúa mi camino al leveleo en Tenhou! (Suena muy a lo Ten...)

"Es mi primer día."

Haciendo a un lado la pequeña referencia en cuanto a Los Simpson, este será mi blog de Mahjong. Hay varios blogs de jugadores en inglés, y sería un agradable cambio tener uno en español.

Hoy fue mi primer día en Tenhou como jugador registrado. Se darán cuenta que me persigue la desgracia ("17"). Pero fueron unos juegos taaaan divertidos. Doble ron de 2 fan (mi toimen) y dealer mangan (yo mismo) a mi shimocha (último lugar del último juego). Y eran jugadores de mucho mayor rank. La cuestión es... en Tenhou, el rank no significa nada.

Y en el próximo round, se auspiciaban cosas aún mejores.

Sin necesidad de aclarar, los resultados de hoy son los siguientes.
